Caribbean Planning for Adaptation to Global Climate Change (CPACC)

CPACC is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the World Bank and executed by the Organization of American States. The project is coordinated in the Caribbean through the Regional Project Implementation Unit (RPIU), which was established by the UWI Centre for Environment and Development (UWICED). The project's overall objective is to support Caribbean countries in preparing to cope with the adverse effects of global climate change (GCC), particularly sea level rise, in coastal and marine areas through vulnerability assessment, adaptation planning, and capacity building linked to adaptation planning. The project website is extremely complete, providing component-by-component description of activities, as well as downloadable documents emerging from project activities including workshop reports, methodological guidelines, assessments, and informational brochures. The website is also set up to provide real-time sensor data for meteorological, sea level, and sea temperature readings. http://www.cpacc.org/

Caribbean Regional Environmental Programme (CREP)

CREP is a Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA) program designed to strengthen regional cooperation and build greater awareness of environmental issues in the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM). One of CREP's main areas of focus is its Regional Environmental Information Network (REIN) component, which shares information on community based initiatives to raise awareness, develop partnerships and access funding. The website describes CREPs objectives, activities, and news updates. http://crep.ccanet.net/index.html

CEPNET

A Sub-Programme of the Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP), CEPNET supports all the activities of CEP by promoting information and data networks, both in terms of electronic information management systems, such as databases and the internet, as well as networking expertise, contacts and agencies. One of CEPNET's main objectives is to strengthen national and regional capabilities for information management and exchange systems among neighbouring countries. The website provides access to a spatial data clearinghouse, access to an electronic news service that includes access to CEPNET's periodic newsletter, and downloadable reports on the program's activities. http://www.cep.unep.org/programmes/cepnet/cepnet.html

Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP) is a USAID-funded, National Environmental Planning Agency (NEPA)-implemented activity designed to protect and improve the environmental quality of the country's coastal resources. The project relies on a community-based program to tackle the problem. http://www.nrca.org/projects/cwip.htm

The Environmental Action (ENACT) Programme

The Jamaica Coastal Water Quality Improvement Project (CWIP) is a USAID and CIDA jointly funded, NEPA-implemented activity designed to protect and improve the environmental quality of the country's coastal resources, relying on a community-based program to tackle the problem. The ENACT programme's goal is to promote sustainable development in Jamaica by supporting the capacity development of key institutions in the public sector, private sector, education sector and communities to manage and use natural resources and the environment in a sustainable way. The NEPA project webpage provides access to training materials and technical publications arising from the project. http://www.enact.org.jm/

Environmental Capacity Development (ENCAPD) Project

The ENCAPD Project is a 4 year initiative that started in 2000 and is financed by the Canadian International Development Agency. The purpose of the project is to strengthen capacity for environmental management in institutions and organisations in the OECS Member States and, in so doing, to assist OECS countries to develop and utilise their natural resources in a sustainable way. The website provides links to the OECS ESDU document library, which contains downloadable documents for different sustainable development areas. http://www.oecsnrmu.org/projects.htm#ENCAPD

Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management in Small Island Developing States of the Caribbean (IWCAM)

This project was developed under the Project Development Facility (PDF) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). UNEP is the lead GEF Implementing Agency in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and UNEP-CAR/RCU is co-executing this project with the Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI), on behalf of the 13 small island developing states of the Wider Caribbean Region. The main focus of this project is the demonstration of integrated watershed and coastal area management systems, which will stress the need for development of a cross-sectoral management approach. Components to be addressed include the requirements for institutional and infrastructural realignment; adoption of modalities for sectoral participation; capacity building; linkages to social and economic root causes of environmental degradation; and the overall need for sustainability.  The long-term goal is to enhance the capacity of the countries to plan and manage their aquatic resources and ecosystems on a sustainable basis. The website contains links to project outputs and information on future project activities. http://www.cep.unep.org/programmes/amep/GEF-IWCAM/GEF-IWCAM.htm

Mainstreaming Adaptation to Global Change (MACC) Project

MACC is a five-year Global Environmental Facility (GEF)-funded project for the Caribbean region. MACC follows the successful CPACC (Caribbean Planning for Adaptation to Climate Change) Project, building on CPACC's achievements with the aim to integrate information on climate change and climate change variability into the agendas of the tourism, agriculture, fisheries and infrastructure sectors. The project website provides background information on MACC, as well as downloadable documents such as sector by sector issues papers, workshops, and background papers. http://www.oas.org/macc/

Marine Protected Area Initiative

A joint initiative by IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA-Marine) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), this project seeks to develop specific indicators and guidelines for marine protected area (MPA) managers to evaluate the effectiveness of their sites; design pilot projects and field test the MPA management effectiveness indicators and guidelines; and to increase awareness and use of monitoring and evaluation in the management of MPAs. The website provides access to a guidebook on the evaluation of management performance, and downloadable background documentation on workshops, publications. http://effectivempa.noaa.gov/

Ridge to Reef Watershed Project

A NEPA-implemented project, Ridge to Reef works with local-level organizations to promote sustainable environmental management practices for resource users; identifies and supports solutions that encourage better enforcement of existing environmental regulations and policy; and enhances the capacity of Jamaican government agencies and private-sector and civil society organizations to implement effective watershed management programs in Jamaica. http://www.nrca.orhttp://g/projects/r2rw.htm

Trinidad and Tobago Climate Change Project

This project, financed by UNDP and the GEF, and implemented by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) in Trinidad, enabled Trinidad and Tobago to prepare its first national communication to the Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The project undertook (a) an inventory of greenhouse gases following the guidelines adopted by the COP; (b) an assessment of potential impacts of climate change in Trinidad and Tobago; (c) an analysis of potential measures to abate the increase in greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to climate change; (d) preparation of a national action plan to address climate change and its adverse impacts; and (e) preparation of the first national communication of Trinidad and Tobago to the COP. In addition, the project aims to enhance general awareness and knowledge on climate change related issues in Trinidad and Tobago and to strengthen the dialogue, information exchange and cooperation among all the relevant stakeholders including Government, non-government, academic and private sector agencies. The link below provides further detail on the project. http://www.ema.co.tt/Fnc/FNC_ProjDoc.htm
