Background
An estimated 420 million hectares of forest – the area of India and Nigeria combined – have been lost through deforestation since 1990. Without halting and reversing deforestation, climate goals cannot be met. A range of nature-based solutions can cost-effectively provide up to one-third of the climate-change mitigation needed between now and 2030 to stabilize global warming below 2 ºC. Of these, reducing deforestation and forest degradation are among the most effective and mature options.

In 2019, the UN Secretary-General initiated a discussion to explore how to accelerate efforts to halt deforestation and restore forests, through ambitious, concerted action and advocacy across and beyond the UN system. In response, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) released a joint statement on “Challenges and Opportunities in Turning the Tide on Deforestation”, containing the latest scientific findings and key messages, at the sixteenth session of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF16) in May 2021.

The High-level Dialogue of the CPF “Upscaling Actions to Turn the Tide on Deforestation” will bring together the heads and principals of the CPF member organizations to build momentum on forest-based climate actions under the UN Secretary-General initiative on Turning the Tide on Deforestation to further explore options for a UN-system wide and CPF response to halt deforestation, building on the existing globally agreed strategies and goals on forests. The event will also be major contributions towards the Stocholm+50 Summit, UNFF17 and the in-depth review of SDG15 by HLPF in 2022.
