UN pilots course on force protection for military, police units (2023)

As part of the United Nation's work to enhance the safety and security of peacekeepers, the Integrated Training Service of the Department of Peace Operations has developed new training materials on force protection.

The Force Protection Specialized Training Materials were developed in collaboration with subject matter experts from 13 troop-contributing countries. They are intended for delivery by Member States as part of the pre-deployment training for uniformed contingents and personnel.

The materials also capitalize on the recommendations of the 2017 “Report on Improving Security of Peacekeepers” carried out by Lieutenant General (Retired) Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz, an in-depth review of peacekeeping fatalities and injuries due to hostile acts.

A pilot course to validate the training materials was held at the UN Global Service Centre in Brindisi from 8 to 19 May.

The course covered topics like risk assessments, tactical planning, and countering emerging threats such as improvised explosive devices, cyberattacks, and disinformation.

Participants gained practical experience and developed their skills to tackle operational challenges through scenario-based exercises.

The course promoted collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and coordination between the military and police components.

The new training materials – once approved – will mark a significant step toward reinforcing force protection measures in UN peacekeeping and ensuring the safety of troops and police in the face of evolving security challenges.
