Synopsis

Objectives

This project aims to deliver the Secretary-General’s vision on the future of multilateralism to advance Our Common Agenda and to response to current and future global challenges.

Components

The project articulates and implements strategic policy direction to ensure United Nations System-wide coherence; develops communication and dissemination products; conducts preparations for and follow-up to the Summit of the Future; and provides strategic support to Member States and senior UN leadership for the decision-making process, management, coordination and implementation of proposals in Our Common Agenda.

Main achievements

The project drove policy coherence, multilateral engagement and operationalized Our Common Agenda, culminating in the Summit of the Future held between 22-23 September 2024, through strategic coordination, stakeholder support, and intergovernmental processes. The Summit of the Future brought together Member States, civil society, and other stakeholders.

The project has supported the co-facilitators in negotiations on the Pact for the Future, adopted by the General Assembly in its resolution 79/1, along with its two key annexes, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. This landmark resolution underscores a collective commitment to address global challenges and accelerating the implementation of Agenda 2030. In preparation for the Summit, support entailed the provision of strategic policy direction and guidance, the consolidation of 161 written outputs from Member States and groups, the support for four multistakeholder consultations, and support to coordination with UN regional commissions to engage Member States and other stakeholders during all five Regional Forums on Sustainable Development. In that regard, high-level advocacy has been also strengthened through direct engagements, including senior UN leaderships visits such as the Under-Secretary-General for Policy, Mr. Guy Ryder one, to key locations such as China. Additionally, a dedicated microsite for the Summit of the Future Action Days was also launched.

Impact

This project is pivotal in advancing the Secretary-General’s vision for the future of multilateralism.
