UN Reinforcement Training Package on Force Protection for Military and Police Units
Additionally, three Training of Trainers courses were conducted, training 87 participants, including 11 female trainers, from 30 Member States. These courses equipped participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to design, develop, and deliver FORPRO, and facilitated the dissemination of materials, including through the Peacekeeping Training Resource Hub.
Synopsis
Objectives
The project aims to enhance the capabilities of military and police units in both static and mobile operations through the design, development, and dissemination of a standardized training package that supports the pre-deployment preparation of military and police units, focusing on force protection issues, namely trainers from troop- and police-contributing countries (T/PCC) in preparing contingents for peace operations.
Components
The project has two components:
-
The development of the training materials and the rollout to all T/PCCs, in consultation with national military and police Subject Matter Experts (SME) from T/PCCs with relevant experience in UN Peace Operations and validation in an in-person pilot course. A diverse team of trainers including ITS and gratis personnel (T/PCC personnel who have passed previous courses and who are made available solely for the purpose of delivering a course) conduct training that builds national capacity.
-
Conduct of Training of Trainers (TOT) courses T/PCCs.
Main achievements
The project developed, disseminated and delivered the UN Force Protection Reinforcement Training Package (UN FORPRO RTP). Support included the development of training materials validated through a pilot course in 2023 in Italy, on threat-based approaches, risk assessment, tactical planning, mitigation measures and it included a scenario-based exercise. The training materials are published on the Peacekeeping Training Resource Hub at: United Nations Force Protection for Military and Police Units - Peacekeeping Resource Hub RTP - Peacekeeping Resource Hub at Department of Peace Operations (DPO).
Impact
The project enhances T/PCC capacities’ to operate, resulting in strengthened mandate implementation, and the reduction of the number of casualties of military and police personnel. Proper training on force protection will attract new pledges to contribute to UN Peace Operations.
