Synopsis

Objectives

The project aims to ensure the availability, readiness, predictability and more timely deployment of military and police peacekeeping capabilities to respond to the specific and emerging needs of UN peacekeeping operations.

Components

Main components entail conducting Advisory Visits to T/PCCs to assess capabilities, identify gaps, and explain UN procedures and requirements, organizing workshops with T/PCCs on new and emerging capability requirements, completing Rapid Deployment Level Verification Visits and conducting Rapid Deployment Level workshops with T/PCCs.

Main achievements

Nine Advisory and Assessment Visits (AAVs) of 30 military and police units in seven countries were completed. These visits enhanced understanding of the readiness and preparedness of Member States’ capabilities pledged under the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System (PCRS), enabling more informed selection of units for deployment and improved performance in the field. AAVs also helped T/PCCs understand capability requirements, identify gaps, and better align with evolving UN procedures. Where necessary, the SFGC led follow-up efforts to coordinate training and capacity-building with the Integrated Training Service and the Light Coordination Mechanism.

Two critical capability workshops were conducted on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) in Peacekeeping Operations. These addressed the needs and gaps of TCCs with existing or potential ISR pledges, clarified UN standards and varying mission requirements, and enhanced coordination with capacity providers and T/PCCs.

Eight Rapid Deployment Level (RDL) Verification Visits were conducted for ten military units. These visits supported the maintenance of readiness for rapid deployment, essential for missions requiring the swift deployment of units.

Impact

The project contributes to operationalizing the UN Peacekeeping Capability Readiness System, which enables the more rapid deployment of uniformed peacekeeping capabilities.
