The Fifth Steering Committee Meeting

UN Peace and Development Trust Fund Vows to Continue Supporting Multilateralism During UN’s 75th Anniversary

The Steering Committee of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund held its fifth meeting on 10 September 2020, doing so virtually owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Committee reviewed the performance of the Fund, which has provided funding to 80 projects in support of the work of the United Nations for international peace, security and development.  The Committee reflected on the results that have been achieved by Fund-supported projects, particularly in the areas of peacekeeping capacity-building and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as its support of activities undertaken in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Looking ahead, the Committee stressed the need to continue supporting multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in promoting international cooperation. The Committee also endorsed 15 projects aimed at strengthening United Nations peace and security capabilities and advancing the 2030 Agenda.

Ms. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Chef de Cabinet and Chair of the Steering Committee, hosted the session. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr. Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, Mr. Yang Tao, Director General from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and Ms. Wang Ying, Director General from the Ministry of Finance of the People’s Republic of China.

The Trust Fund was established in 2016 following the pledge by the Government of the People's Republic of China to contribute $200 million to the United Nations over a ten-year period.  To date, the Trust Fund has received $100 million from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
