On 14 June 2018, the Steering Committee of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust fund convened its third meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.  Ms. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Chef de Cabinet and Chair of the Steering Committee, hosted the session, which was also attended by Mr. Liu Zhenmin, Under Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, H.E. Ambassador Ma Zhaoxu, Permanent Representative of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations, Mr. Li Junhua, Director-General from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, and representatives from the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Permanent Mission of People’s Republic of China to the United Nations.

The Steering Committee reviewed the performance of the Trust Fund and stressed the importance of effective planning, monitoring and evaluation efforts, including with IT tools.  The Committee undertook to identify more long-term projects that would have profound impact and reflect the shared priorities of the United Nations and China, including ensuring the safety of peacekeepers, strengthening capacity to maintain peace in Africa, implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and seizing opportunities created by the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Steering Committee endorsed 21 projects to be funded in 2018, including supporting the Secretary-General’s High-level Advisory Board on Mediation, implementing the recommendations of the report Improving Security of United Nations Peacekeepers, and strengthening the capacity of LDCs to implement the 2030 Agenda.  The Committee also expressed a desire to support more peace and security projects this year, and in its ongoing review will give priority to proposals submitted by field missions.
