Steering Committee Meeting of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund

On 27 October 2017, the Steering Committee of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund gathered at UN Headquarters in New York for its semi-annual meeting to review the Fund's work, priorities and operations. The meeting was chaired by Chef de Cabinet Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. Other Committee members in attendance included Ambassador Wu Haitao, Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China; Mr. Zhenmin Liu, Under-Secretary-General of the Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA); and the Director-Generals from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance from the China.

The Fund was established as an expression of China's commitment to the United Nations and multilateral cooperation. Its purpose is to support the goals of the Charter of the United Nations, especially the maintenance of international peace and security and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

During its first year, the Fund approved 13 projects encompassing peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, rapid response, education and health care for refugees, capacity-building in developing countries to unleash the potential of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, and the mainstreaming of migration into national development plans.

In their discussions, members of the Steering Committee highlighted the need for the Fund to continue supporting the Secretary-General's reform efforts and priorities. They also stressed a number of guiding principles and practices, including inclusive consultations, accountability, coordination and South-South cooperation.

The Committee endorsed the priority areas for 2018 and the funding of 17 projects for 2017.
