Nathan Opoku Kofi DANQUAH of Ghana has been the Principal Security Advisor for the United Nations Department of Safety and Security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the 1st of April 2023. Having commenced his career with the Ghana Military Academy in 1983 as an Officer Cadet, Mr. Danquah served till retiring honorably as a Major in October 1999. A graduate of the Ghana Senior Command and Staff College, he participated in several Peacekeeping operations over the years including UNIFIL Lebanon (1988 & 1992), ECOMOG Liberia (1990 & 1997-1998), UNAMIR Rwanda (1993-1994), and ECOMOG HQ in Sierra Leone (1998-1999). His professional work experiences include serving for 5 years as an Investigator/Team Leader with UNICTR, Rwanda. Then, he worked as a UN Security Advisor for 3 years in Cameroon. He also performed surge missions to Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Central African Republic. He served as Chief Security Advisor in several duty stations starting from 2007 to 2023 in Nigeria, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Chad, Darfur, Sudan and Syria. Mr. Danquah has MA in International Policy & Diplomacy from Staffordshire University, Stoke-on-Trent, a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Administration from GIMPA in Ghana, as well as a BSC in Politics & International Relations from University of London. He is fluent in English and French and has further professional training and certificates from UN System Staff College and other academic organizations in Executive Leadership, Countering Terrorism & Organized Crime, Conflict Analysis for Prevention & Peacebuilding, Mediation, Election Observation, Project Management in the NGO Sector, Hostage Incident Management, Criminal Investigations, Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration, Human Security and Investigation Techniques. Born in 1961, Mr. Danquah is married and has 3 children. He is an Associate Member of Chatham House, UK, and likes football, reading magazines, and listening to country music.
