High-Level Dialogue on Energy: Online Stakeholders Thematic Debate

3 June 2021, 8:30AM – 10:30AM EDT (New York Time)

The High-level Dialogue on Energy, to be held in September 2021, represents the first global gathering on energy under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly since 1981. It provides a historic opportunity to drive energy transformation in the first years of the SDG Decade of Action and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement. 

The engagement of stakeholders from a broad range of sectors, including non-governmental organizations, civil society, academic institutions, the scientific community, local and regional governments, the private sector and philanthropic organizations will be critical for the successful outcomes of the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy. 

In this regard, UN DESA in collaboration with the Dialogue Co-Chairs will organize a series of online briefings in the lead up to the event in order to share information with stakeholders about the Dialogue and its preparatory process, including opportunities for stakeholder participation and contribution. 

The first online briefing was held on 17 December 2020

Online Stakeholders Thematic Debate 

The online technical dialogue was held on 3 June 2021, 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM EDT (New York Time).

The online thematic debate was scheduled to promote an exchange of views and contributions from stakeholders on the five overarching themes of the United Nations High Level Dialogue on Energy. Each of the five segments representing targets of the SDG 7, brought together a member of the Technical Working Group showcasing the advancement of technical discussions, and a variety of global stakeholders presenting their challenges, successes and recommendations in achieving SDG 7.

The opening remarks also served to announce the publication of the Stakeholders Thematic E-Consultation Summary Report, prepared with the inputs from stakeholders on the five themes of the HLDE to scale up actions in achieving SDG 7 and its targets.

This event was convened by UN DESA in collaboration with UN Energy.

United Nations High Level Dialogue on Energy - Stakeholders Thematic E-Consultation

Provide inputs to the stakeholders thematic e-consultation for the United Nations High Level Dialogue on Energy!

 

Background

The High-level Dialogue on Energy, to be held in September 2021, represents the first global gathering on energy under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly since 1981. It provides a historic opportunity to drive energy transformation in the first years of the SDG Decade of Action and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The High-level Dialogue on Energy will be structured around five overarching themes: (1) Energy access; (2) Energy transition. (3) Enabling SDGs through inclusive, just energy transitions; (4) Innovation, technology and data and (5) Finance and investment. More information about the overarching themes can be found here.

 

Stakeholders Thematic E-Consultation

In this regard, UN DESA is organizing an e-consultation to compile technical inputs from stakeholders on the five themes of the UN High Level Dialogue. The objective is to collect inputs from stakeholders to the five themes of the United Nations High Level Dialogue on Energy. The e-consultation will also support on the mobilization and outreach of stakeholders from different sectors towards the High-Level Dialogue.

Outcomes

High-Level Dialogue on Energy: Stakeholders Online Briefing

Background

The High-level Dialogue on Energy, to be held in September 2021, represents the first global gathering on energy under the auspices of the General Assembly since the UN Conference on New and Renewable Sources of Energy held in Nairobi in 1981. It presents a historic opportunity to provide transformational action in the first years of the SDG Decade of Action and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

The engagement of stakeholders from a broad range of sectors, including non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions, the scientific community, local and regional governments, the private sector and philanthropic organizations will be critical for the successful outcomes of the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy.

The first informative online briefings took place on 17 November 2020, 8AM – 9AM (EST/New York Time). This session included simultaneous interpretation into Spanish.
