The Panel Discussion on Migration and Sustainable Development-Opportunities and Challenges will be co-organized by the Division for Sustainable Development and the Population Division, DESA in the margin of the forty-sixth session of the Commission on Population and Development, to be held in New York on 22-26 April 2013.

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized an expert group meeting on population distribution, urbanization, internal migration and development. The meeting was held at the United Nations in New York from 21 to 23 January 2008.
International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope,complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination.
The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations is organizing the Eighth Coordination Meeting on International Migration. The Meeting is being held in response to General Assembly Resolution 58/208 of 13 February 2004, which requests the Secretary-General to continue convening meetings to coordinate international migration activities.
