Contribution of population policy to the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals including the Millennium Development Goals

Population is at the core of development, and population trends are a key element of the context in which development takes place. Consequently, population policies directed towards influencing demographic behaviour and population dynamics, such as those contained in the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the key actions for its further implementation would, if fully implemented, contribute significantly to the achievement of universally agreed development goals, including those in the United Nations Millennium Declaration.

The objective of the meeting was to highlight the contribution of population policy to achieving the Internationally Agreed Development Goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, and to provide input to the 2009 session of the Commission on Population and Development. The special theme of the 2009 session is the contribution of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development to the Internationally Agreed Development Goals, including the Millennium Development Goals.
