Climate, Peace and Security in Stabilization contexts in the Sahel

The Sahel faces a deepening crisis marked by conflict, insecurity, and the growing impacts of climate change. To understand how climate, peace and security (CPS) approaches can complement ongoing stabilization efforts, UNDP, in partnership with the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), Liptako-Gourma Authority (LGA), African Union Commission (AUC), Climate Commission for the Sahel Region (CCRS), and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), convened regional experts and policymakers in La Somone, Senegal, and New York, USA.

The report, “Climate, Peace and Security in Stabilization Contexts in the Sahel,” captures key insights from these discussions, which brought together over 250 stakeholders. It outlines how climate-related risks — such as droughts, floods, and land degradation — intersect with conflict dynamics, displacement, and livelihood challenges, while highlighting opportunities to design integrated solutions that build resilience and social cohesion.
