Jeff Brez

As Chief of the Civil Society, Advocacy and Special Events Section in the UN Department of Global Communications, Mr. Brez oversees relations with non-governmental organizations, the Messengers of Peace Programme, the Creative Community Outreach Initiative and Special Events. His work is international humanitarian aid and development assistance has spanned more than a decade and covered a range of issues including children’s and women’s rights, refugee assistance, child soldiers, health, education, sustainable agriculture and food security, environmental sustainability, anticorruption and climate change.

 

 

Werner Obermyer

Werner Obermeyer is Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) office at United Nations Headquarters in New York. His portfolio includes the promotion of health in the General Assembly and other inter-governmental processes, the WHO’s relations with the UN system entities based in New York, as well as non-governmental organizations that focus on public health issues. He was responsible for the negotiations which culminated in adoption of the 2011, 2014 and 2018 Political Declarations on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, the 2016 Political Declaration on Anti-Microbial Resistance, the 2018 Political Declaration on Tuberculosis and the 2019 Political Declaration on Universal Health Coverage.  

He oversees initiatives related to the SDGs, global health and foreign policy, universal health coverage, heath security and social protection, road safety, malaria, climate change and health, disabilities, narcotics and drugs, mental health and tobacco control. Prior to joining the World Health Organization he was the representative of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) in New York, responsible for environmental governance, health determinants and sustainable development. Before joining the United Nations he served in the South African Foreign Service, holding various senior diplomatic assignments.

Holly Shaw

Holly K Shaw, PhD, RN, is an expert in health and healing with a focus on crisis, trauma and bereavement. Dr. Shaw, a clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric/mental health nursing, is a graduate of the Harvard Medical School Masters Certificate Program in Global Mental Health and earned degrees at Boston University and Adelphi University, College of Nursing and Public Health where she is an Adjunct Professor. She earned a PhD in 1998 focusing on the extended impact of the death of a peer during adolescence and served as Senior Consultant to the Chancellor's Office of the City of New York in developing the initial city-wide Board of Education Crisis Response System. In that capacity, she developed an award-winning program on adolescent bereavement and worked with many communities throughout the US including the community of Concord, New Hampshire recovering from the Death of Teacher in Space, Christa McAuliffe.

Dr. Shaw is active in the United Nations NGO community where she facilitated the affiliation between the UN and Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing. She currently represents the International Council of Nurses (ICN) , a federation of a federation of more than 130 national nurses associations, representing the more than 16 million nurses worldwide and the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health. She serves in several elected NGO positions at the UN including Vice Chair, NGO Committee on Mental Health, Co-Convenor, Working Group on Refugee and Immigrant Mental Health, Vice Chair, The NGO Committee on Education, Learning and Literacy and recently completed a four-year term as Director on the UN NGO DPI Executive Committee. She focuses on global health and mental health issues with NGOs, UN agencies, and Ambassadors including Children and Armed Conflict, Post-Conflict Recovery, Human Trafficking and Education for Global Citizenship.

Dr. Shaw contributes to the American Journal of Nursing and is the author of peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters. She is an invited lecturer at universities, medical centers and community-based organizations in the US, and many global settings, including the People’s Republic of China, Uganda, Israel, Jordan, India, and Cambodia, where she is consulting on several projects with the Ministry of Health and Education.

Dr. Shaw is an Adjunct professor at Adelphi University.  She enjoys a mental health practice in Sea Cliff, NY specializing in trauma, crisis, bereavement and professional self-care and resilience.

Peter Johnson

Dr. Peter Johnson has worked for Jhpiego, an international NGO affiliated with Johns Hopkins University since 2006. He served as Director of Global Learning until 2017. In August 2018, he was promoted to the role of Senior Director of Nursing and Midwifery, where he assumes overall responsibility for shaping Jhpiego’s strategic support to nursing and midwifery workforce development in low and middle income nations. In his role, he supports over 1000 midwives and nurses working within Jhpiego’s global organization. With a PhD in Educational Psychology and 20 years of experience in higher education, Peter leads efforts to strengthen Jhpiego’s learning activities worldwide, including innovative approaches to strengthening education, ensuring educational quality through regulatory accreditation and licensure, and promoting capacity approaches that result in sustained ability to provide quality care. Peter works with ministries of health and education to strengthen the policy framework supporting professional midwifery education. Dr. Johnson’s leadership role includes coordination with the International Council of Nurses, International Confederation of Midwives, WHO, UN agencies and other global and regional partners interested in promoting a high quality nursing and midwifery workforce in low and middle income countries. Most recently, Dr. Johnson has directed a team contracted to WHO to support the first State of the World Nursing Report. 

 

Virya Koy

 

Dr. Koy Virya is a Deputy Director of Department Hospital Services, Ministry of Health. He is the Postdoctoral fellowship at Chulalongkorn University, the Chief Nursing Officer Nursing Focal Person in Cambodia for WHO-WPRO, and Chair Board of Cambodian Association of Nurses. In addition, he was one of the founders of Cambodian Council of Nurses, Cambodian Midwives Council, and Cambodian Association of Nurses, which aim to promote nursing and midwifery professions in Cambodia. Dr. Koy served as President of Cambodian Council of Nurses from 2013-2016. He is the first doctoral degree in nursing science in Cambodia. He obtained her doctoral degree from the Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, in 2017. He is recently a member of Sigma Theta Tau International.

He is a research fellow in “The effect of 12-hour-shift designed on quality of nursing work life, nursing care quality, care left undone, and patient safety: A Mixed Method Study”, Thailand. Dr. Koy has conducted many research projects continuously over 5 years, specifically in the areas of nursing administration, policy, nursing workforce, health care system, infection prevention and control, and quality of care, primary health care, and increase hypertensive patients in terms of self-management. He has served as the Examiner of the Master Degree Program in Health Professions Education at University of Philippines, Manila for the past 5 years.  Recently, he is served as Bachelor of Philosophy of thesis defense, School of Nursing, Pittsburgh University. His publications have been accepted by international journals in the level of ISI and Scopus, and he is invited to be speaker at national and international events in the areas of health promotion, nursing education, research, partnership, leadership and management. Virya has been nominated editorial board reviewer of International Nursing Journals (Journal of Nursing Management, Pacific Rim International Journal of Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Research and Practice, Journal of Nursing and Midwifery, SAGE, and American of Nursing Science).

Virya’s achievement included development national nursing policy, Scope of practice, standard of nursing practice, code of ethics for Cambodian nurses, code of ethics for midwives, nursing process guideline, national nursing and midwifery protocol, ASEAN Core competency for professional nurses, and is a one of committee members of the Developing Master of Nursing Science at University of Health Sciences.

He has also sat in some committees such Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Antibiotic microbial Resistance committee, Nosocomial Infection Surveillance, and Quality Improvement for Private Sector Evaluation. Besides, he has been a Co-chair of international conference more than 100 participants from 39 countries globally, and also several conferences arranged in Cambodia. Currently, he is participating in the Infection Prevention and Control for COVID19 Committee to set up triage, isolation room, and using personal protective equipment. Regarding to international networking, Dr. Koy is a member of Asia Pacific Emergency Disaster Nursing Network (APEDNN); and a member of Asian Congress in Nursing Education.

Tammy Toney-Butler

Tammy J. Toney-Butler is a Registered Professional Nurse with thirty years of experience. She has extensive expertise in the areas of trauma and emergency department nursing where Tammy specialized for most of her career. Tammy is a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and holds three national certifications in trauma and emergency nursing which include Certified Emergency Nurse, Trauma Certified Registered Nurse, and Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse.

A published author, invited speaker and nationally recognized content expert in the field of Human Trafficking, Tammy serves as an anti-human trafficking consultant, community outreach education director, nurse advocate, and survivor leader for Path2Freedom, Inc., a non-profit, 501c3, that provides housing and long-term, trauma-informed care for commercially sexually exploited children. Tammy is the co-founder of Nurses United Against Human Trafficking and is currently involved in developing the standards of long-term care for this unique population. She is deeply dedicated to ending sexual violence and human trafficking also through means of prevention and raising awareness.

In 2019, Tammy was one of 5 selected speakers at the American Nurses Association (ANA) Membership Assembly in Washington, D.C. Her presentation titled, Human Trafficking: A Nursing Perspective in Solving a Public Health Crisis, spearheaded proposals to change nursing policy during her dialogue forum discussion.  As a result of her efforts, and unanimously voted upon, a national human trafficking task force for nursing was initiated and policy changes were adopted.

Tammy often speaks alongside her colleagues at Homeland Security Investigations Human Trafficking Unit and offers strategic planning to end the global scourge of modern-day slavery. She has been training healthcare providers on human trafficking, adverse childhood experiences, and trauma-informed care and currently has an online CEU training module throughout the nation’s northeast states. Her hand-crafted training curriculum is specifically catered to healthcare professionals on identifying, treating and referring victims of human trafficking.  

Tammy is involved in numerous research projects on human trafficking, serving as Co-Principal Investigator or as a subject matter expert. Her current project is a collaborative effort with Molloy College and its Center for Nursing Research and Evaluation to perform a statewide study of acute-care settings. 

Teddy M. Potter

Dr. Potter is deeply committed to climate change education including co-founding Health Professionals for a Healthy Planet, membership in the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, and membership on the American Academy of Nursing Environment and Public Health Expert Panel. She is a member of the Coordinating Committee of Columbia University’s Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education and a Fellow in the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota. She chairs Clinicians for Planetary Health (C4PH) and is a member of the Steering Committee of the Planetary Health Alliance at Harvard. 

At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Potter designed and co-teaches an interdisciplinary course titled “The Global Climate Challenge: Creating an Empowered Movement for Change.” In addition, she co-leads a Health Sciences initiative titled, “Climate Change and Health: An Interprofessional Response.” Working in partnership with Project Drawdown, Dr. Potter has co-created Nurses Drawdown. By embracing and teaching the evidence-based solutions of Nurses Drawdown, nurses around the world will help to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and create a healthier future for humans and the rest of the planet. In 2019, Dr. Potter was appointed the first Director of Planetary Health for the School of Nursing. 

Oriana Beaudet

 

Oriana Beaudet is the Vice President of Nursing Innovation for the American Nurses Association (ANA, ANCC, & ANF).  Her enterprise wide role is to develop the organizations strategic national framework for innovation. Through this work, she will influence the ability for nurses to engage with and lead innovation across the healthcare ecosystem. “The ANA Enterprise organizations have created a bedrock for nursing practice across our country. Our profession has a rich history of inventing solutions for patient needs. Redefining and reimagining the future role of nursing, begins with the work we lead today.”

Beaudet builds future-oriented healthcare organizations, igniting professionals with innovation by driving excitement for industry-wide transformation and business. She has run her own business and worked for a healthcare exclusive design firm leading organizational, clinical, and business strategy for premier healthcare organizations across the United States. 

After 17 years in the industry, Beaudet believes that it is critical to shift healthcare for the future good and inspire a new generation of healthcare professionals. Her doctoral work is centered on the application of innovation to shift the practices of healthcare providers, care delivery and organizational culture. This initiative took the form of an annual event (Planting Seeds of Innovation) at which nurses, healthcare professional, and educators can gather to learn about the application of innovation, creativity, design around emergent trends. In keeping with this goal, Beaudet is also affiliate nursing faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing where she mentors graduate, DNP, and PhD nursing students, and supporting program growth. Beaudet was awarded the 2020 Visionary Leader award from the Nursing Collaboratory.

Beaudet shared her pursuit of a better healthcare future at Mayo Clinic’s Transform Summit, Stanford Med X Change, Healthcare Design’s annual conference, and several others.  As a foresight practitioner and member of the Association of Professional Futurists, Beaudet is trained in identifying signals, trends, and events to help healthcare clients understand where the industry is heading.  Leading to her larger future mission of transforming the healthcare industry and nursing profession.
