The General Assembly commemorates 26 September as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. This Day provides an opportunity for the international community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament and to raise public awareness about the threat posed by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination.

In accordance with General Assembly resolution 68/32 and subsequent resolutions, the purpose of the International Day is to further the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons through enhanced public awareness and education. In so doing, it is hoped that these activities will help mobilize international efforts toward achieving the common goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
