Together we can change so much

Parliamentarians

The Least Developed Countries, 46 in total, are home to 40% of the world’s poor and remain far behind the rest of the world in terms of human development and economic prospects. Only a handful of countries have graduated from the LDC category over the past twelve years. Today’s concurrent food, energy and financial crises are obstructing further their development path.

The Parliamentary Forum will focus on the role of Parliaments in the implementation of the DPoA. After reflecting on the main challenges as well as the opportunities faced by the LDCs today, two critical issues will be discussed: development cooperation (aid); and good governance. A gender perspective will permeate much of the discussion. Underscoring this, an IPU report on the representation of women in LDC parliaments will be presented. This event will cater to the members of parliament attending the LDC5 as part of their national delegations. The forum will consist of a high-level opening segment followed by interactive panel discussions featuring members of parliament, UN officials, and civil society representatives. The event is co-organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Shura Council of Qatar.

Not just individual parliamentarians but parliaments as institutions need to be closely engaged in the implementation of the DPoA. Parliaments need to mainstream the DPoA through all legislation, including the most critical budget bill, and in a way that complements and reinforces the global drive for the SDGs

Martin Chungong, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
