The power of gender equality
Promoting gender equality and the rights of women and girls is crucial as we seek to create a more sustainable world. It is also a key component of policies designed to harness the potential of a favourable age distribution and to address demographic challenges.
Empowering women leads to increased decision-making capacity in all spheres of life, including in their reproductive choices. Universal access to sexual and reproductive health care, including family planning, and the protection of reproductive rights enable individuals and couples to better realize their fertility intentions.
As the share of population in the working ages is rising in some countries, investment in women’s education and training is needed to capitalize on the demographic dividend. When women and girls gain more autonomy, their families and communities thrive.
On this World Population Day, let us recommit to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in these areas.
