In January 2026, Holocaust survivor Ms. Elżbieta Ficowska visited United Nations Headquarters in New York in conjunction with the exhibition Between Life and Death: Stories of Rescue during the Holocaust, in which she was featured.
Ms. Elżbieta Ficowska was born in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942. When she was six months old, she was smuggled out of the ghetto in a wooden box. Her mother, Henia Koppel, placed Elżbieta inside that box with a silver spoon engraved with Elżbieta's name and birth date, and entrusted her to rescuers who risked their lives to save Jewish children.
In her interview with Melissa Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Ms. Ficowska emphasized the importance of remembrance and urged the world to seek love and goodness even in the darkest times.
