On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Visitors Services in New York launched its Focus on Women Tour.

The new tour shines a light on the UN’s contribution to the lives of women everywhere, as well as some of the most notable women activists who have shaped the work of the United Nations.

The Focus on Women Tour introduces significant contributions of women to the United Nations’ work on peace and security, human rights, and development.

Although the voices of women have often been silenced, their resilience and insight have made them agents of change.

“It has been a powerful experience to partake in bringing to life the Women’s Tour and explain to visitors the UN’s work through the lens of women,” said Tour Guide Regina Varthi from Greece.

The new tour will cover women who have influenced the history of the UN as an organization, as well as topics such as:

  • Security Council resolution 1325 on the role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts

  • the unique and growing contribution of women in peace operations

  • Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality and women’s empowerment

  • General Assembly milestones helping advance the status of women around the world

It will also showcase the gift of Panama in the General Assembly Lobby, a traditional Mola style tapestry that was made by indigenous Kuna women.

The Focus on Women Tour includes access to the Security Council Chamber, the Economic and Social Council Chamber, and the General Assembly Hall (meetings permitting).

“What a privilege it is to engage with, impact and inspire the future generations of women agents of change,” added Tour Guide Adalgisa Sanchez-Dominguez from the Dominican Republic.

For the month of March, the Focus on Women Tour is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:30 pm.

As of 5 April, it will be offered every two weeks and at any other time upon request.
