The UN Postal Administration (UNPA) in the Department of Operational Support has released “Year of the Tiger” stamps to celebrate the upcoming Chinese Lunar Calendar year, beginning 1 February 2022 and ending 21 January 2023.
The stamp sheets include a set of ten stamps valued at $1.30 each, and feature a tiger placed next to the UN emblem.
The UN emblem can remain as is or may be replaced with a personalized photo of your choice!
The stamps were illustrated by Mr. Tiger Pan from China, who also illustrated the “Year of the Dog” stamp series in 2018.
According to legend…
According to legend, a celestial race was organized by the Jade Emperor – a god in traditional Chinese religion – to determine the order of the zodiacs.
The race required animals to cross a river, and the following twelve species showed up at the start line: a pig, dog, rooster, monkey, sheep, horse, snake, dragon, rabbit, tiger, ox, and a rat.
The tiger, confident that its speed and vigour would prevail, learned that it ranked in third place – bested by the rat who placed first for its cunning, and the ox who placed second for its diligence.
It has been said that people born in years of the tiger are vigorous, ambitious, daring, courageous, enthusiastic, generous, and self-confident, with a sense of justice and a commitment to help others for the greater good.
Going forward, UNPA will design and issue stamps every year to mark the Chinese Lunar Calendar year.
