To mark Human Rights Day on 10 December, Ciné-ONU Vienna, and for the first time, Ciné-ONU Budapest organized virtual screenings of the documentary “Parlika”. This documentary explores women’s rights in Afghanistan and tells the story of Suraya Parlika, an Afghan women’s rights activist.
Vienna’s online screening on 6 December was organized by the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna with the Permanent Mission of Slovakia to the UN (Vienna). The Slovak Ambassador, Radomir Bohac, delivered opening remarks before the screening.
The screening was followed by a panel discussion with the director, Sahraa Karimi, who fled Afghanistan in August 2021; film producer and acting president of the Slovak Television Academy, Wanda Adamik Hrycova, who helped Karimi escape; and journalist and author Petra Ramsauer. UNIS Vienna Director Martin Nesirky moderated the discussion on the importance of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
The Ciné-ONU Budapest screening took place on the 10 December. Organized by UNIS Vienna and the International Diplomatic Student Association (IDSA), the screening was the first ever by Ciné-ONU Budapest. The Budapest screening included a panel discussion with Péter Marton, associate professor at Corvinus University, Budapest, and Máté Szalai, coordinator of the Middle Eastern and North African Research Programme at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and senior lecturer at Corvinus University.
