Climate Action and Biodiversity Session at #YouthLead Innovation Festival

Youth-led Solutions for Climate Action and Biodiversity

The Komb Green Solutions programs have served as good practice for sustainable managing green spaces in Nairobi. Komb Green Solutions has used their training and expertise in riparian ecosystems development to reclaim riparian lands and transform dumpsites into recreational areas for people living in Nairobi’s informal settlements. The Founder, Okinda, together with his team have also used their platform and leadership to transform more than 120 youth involved in criminal activities into community changemakers.

During the 2020 ACE Dialogues and the May-June Session, we heard from Parties that they don’t always have the capacity to generate new ideas or think about ACE when there are (seemingly) more pressing issues at hand. The ACE Youth Forum (ACEYF) was established to fill this gap and organize our power as youth to develop innovative ideas for the new ACE Work Programme. The ACEYF brought together more than 500 youth from all regions of the world to share their experiences implementing ACE principles and craft youth policy commendations for an ACE Decision at COP26. As a result, we received invitations from multiple Party Stakeholders to continue discussing our ideas after the Forum. We hope this event showcased to Parties that youth have the power, knowledge, and capabilities to be effective members of their teams and included in decision-making processes that impact our future.

Within the Central American Dry Corridor, unemployment rates have sky-rocketed and due to climate change and the tons of oil that end up in water sources, there is a lack of water fit for human consumption. To address these issues, this team of young entrepreneurs collect and recycle used oil and transform it into artisanal soap that can be used for the washing of hands and clothes. Hydrolution also intends to train adolescents and young people through workshops and courses on the fabrication of soaps from vegetable oils. Their goal is to address both unemployment and environmental issues in the ‘Dry Corridor’ of Nicaragua.

The GEO Hazard Mapping Initiative is focused on deploying volunteer youths who are skilled at using Geographic Information Systems and satellite imagery analysis to create susceptibility and emergency mapping of actual or expected natural, biological, and technological hazards being experienced in Nigeria and other African countries as a result of Climate Change.

The GREENfluidics® create an Intelligent Solar Biopanel is a 100% Mexican technology, unique in the world, which aims to generate energy and oxygen while absorbing carbon dioxide, thanks to the use of microalgae and nanofluids with which we reinvent the way in which energy is generated, the style that it can give to buildings for their geometry and adaptability, and the use of data through a global network of monitoring of sustainability, regeneration and environmental health. In this way, the Bio panel contributes to combat climate change in the two best possible ways, on the one hand, its function as an air biofilter helps to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and on the other, an alternative that promotes energy efficiency, helping to reduce electricity consumption from fossil fuels.

“Jemina & The Wind of Turbines”, led by Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability for Africa Initiative (REES Africa)

Energy access in Africa is a key policy priority given the strict interrelation between energy, economic growth, environment and sustainability. Given the enormity of the climate challenge and the limited existing literature for African Children by African authors who understand their reality, the “Jemina & The Wind of Turbines” book launched in June 2021 responds to the need to educate and orientate Nigerian children on Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability. Based on childhood experiences, and true-life stories the book presents challenges in Nigeria, and is a powerful narrative on energy and environmental issues to equip children with the right mindset and helps us achieve sustainability. It secondarily teaches gender equality, and leadership attributes which children need to understand during their formative years. It will be distributed via partnerships across schools in Nigeria on SDG 7 and SDG 13- holding practical sessions on assembling solar lamp/wind turbine or upcycling plastics into creative art.
