Title

Tepak Sireh

Gift ID:
UNNY301G

This gift is a container, called Tepak Sireh, and also comprises several other covered vessels or ""cembul"", which holds the betel nut, leaves and other related condiments. The betel nut is conditioned for chewing and has been within the regional culture for over 2,000 years. Betel chewing is a social custom practiced across Asia, including Malaysia. The Tepak Sireh, keeps the betel nut and leaf ready for use and is a symbol of welcome and hospitality.

This ornate Tepak Sireh is decorated with traditional Malay debossed, inlaid with precious gems and is finished in gold leaf. The main casing is adorned with the Malay coat of arms, and each accompanying cembul shows an emblem of a corresponding state or territory. The case and cembul are displayed on and highly embellished silver tray supported by 4 traditional, ceremonial knives, three Malay daggers or “keris”, and a knife, traditional to the Iban people, known as a “parang”. The design of the object signifies the unity and strength of Malaysia, and the Tepak Sireh itself symbolizes communication, cooperation and hospitality.

The Tepak Sireh was presented by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, to the United Nations and Secretary-General Kofi Annan accepted it. At the presentation ceremony, Malaysia was recognized for its constructive and committed role as a Member State of the United Nations, as a contributor to United Nations peace operations; and as a leading voice for developing and non-aligned nations; as well as a promoter of dialogue and understanding among the peoples of the world. Upon receiving this gift, the Secretary-General said, “may this tepak sireh inspire our staff and visitors alike as a symbol of harmony in diversity.”
