The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in at least 27 million cases and over 900,000 deaths worldwide according to the WHO’s latest figures. Despite women’s enormous contributions to mitigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the crisis is threatening to erase decades of progress for women and girls.

UN System-wide MEDEVAC Task Force aids COVID-19 response

In response to the pandemic, the Organization needed to support its personnel and partners so they could stay in their duty stations and deliver. To ensure the availability of potentially life-saving care to those who fall seriously ill with COVID-19, the Secretary-General established the UN System-wide COVID-19 MEDICAL EVACUATION Task Force, led by AnneMarie Van Den Berg, within the Department of Operational Support.

Meet Ghada Waly, the first woman to lead UNODC

Ghada Waly is the first woman, first Arab and first African to lead the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, a position which she took up in February 2020. She is also Director‑General of the UN Office at Vienna. Prior to joining the United Nations, Dr. Waly was Minister of Social Solidarity in Egypt.
