Opening remarks at the panel discussion on the 2017 report of the Inter-agency Task Force at the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development follow-up

Excellencies,Distinguished delegates,Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to this morning’s panel discussion on the 2017 report of the Inter-agency Task Force on Financing for Development.

This discussion marks the beginning of the expert segment of this Forum. Over the next two days, we will discuss the state of implementation in each of the action areas of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda in depth.

We will assess progress made in the first two years of implementation, identify obstacles and gaps, and share lessons learned from this early implementation experience. Finally, this expert segment will allow us to address new and emerging topics and to set an agenda for the year ahead.

I trust that the report of the Inter-agency Task Force, which we officially launched on Monday, will be a good guide for your deliberations.

Before opening this panel discussion, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the members of the Inter-agency Task Force for their hard work and excellent cooperation in preparing this year’s report and its online annex.

This report was prepared under the coordination of the Financing for Development Office of UN DESA and in close collaboration with the major institutional stakeholders of the Financing for Development process, the World Bank Group, the IMF, the WTO, UNCTAD and UNDP. More than 50 United Nations agencies, programmes and offices, regional commissions, and other relevant international institutions, such as the OECD and Financial Stability Board, have contributed to its production.

As always, the major institutional stakeholders have taken a leading role, and I am very grateful for their continued commitment to our joint work.

I presented the main findings of our report on Monday, and therefore will not go into greater depth at this point. My colleagues from DESA, major institutional stakeholders and other Task Force members will elaborate specific findings and recommendations in this panel and in subsequent sessions of the expert segment.

I would however like to leave you with one final thought.

The next two days present an excellent opportunity to identify success stories and the lessons we can draw from them to apply in other countries and contexts. It will also allow us to identify those areas where we need additional efforts to put us on track to meet our global goals. I encourage you all to reflect on this and to point out those questions that remain unanswered, those policy challenges that await solutions.

Members of the Task Force will listen carefully. Your deliberations will inform preparations of next year’s report.

Our goal is to put the combined analytical capacity of this Task Force to work to support you in implementing the Addis Agenda and in achieving the SDGs. We can do so best if we receive guidance and advice from all of you.

Thank you.
