Indigenous Peoples are the best stewards of our environment

In this opinion piece for The Independent, writer and UN Food Systems Summit Special Envoy, Dr. Agnes Kalibata, notes the key roles played by smallholder farmers in food systems and acknowledges that a hub for indigenous knowledge would provide a new resource to help countries identify ways to conserve agricultural biodiversity and develop more sustainable food production practices.

Governments should also harness the benefits of knowledge from among indigenous Peoples, who manage a quarter of the Earth’s surface, including rainforests, but preserve 80 per cent of the remaining biodiversity.
