This Side Event | Rethinking public debt policies for the SDGs: Regional perspectives is jointly organised by the five Regional Commissions of the United Nations - namely, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) as part of the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development Follow-Up 2023.
The main objective of this side event is to discuss potential policy options and approaches to deal with sovereign debt distress while keeping in view the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and long-term climate ambitions. Given a vast diversity among different regions of the world, this event also aims to discuss policy experiences and lessons which can inform policy formulation and implementation in other regions. It also discusses ways by which enhanced multilateral cooperation, with the support of United Nations Regional Commissions, can facilitate member States and the international development community in taking their initiatives forward.
