“Catalyzing transformative actions and integrated approaches to sustainable development: regional experiences to accelerate progress on the SDGs”
78th session of the UN General Assembly
Monday, 16 October 2023, 10 AM – 12 PM EST
The complex and interconnected challenges facing people and planet – from growing inequality, debt burden, shrinking fiscal space, climate change, conflicts, biodiversity loss to rapidly evolving, disruptive technology – necessitate an unprecedented level of cooperation, and innovative and multi-sectoral actions. The integrated nature of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals requires new perspectives for policymaking and international cooperation. Member States in the Political Declaration recently adopted at the SDG Summit “recognize that the integrated nature of the SDGs requires a global response” (para.39) and “encourage all relevant actors to better address interlinkages, synergies and trade-offs between the SDGs, enhancing policy coherence for sustainable development” (para. 38).
Advancing the SDGs requires nexus approaches and prioritizing policies and investments that have multiplier effects across the Goals. Nexus approaches help uncover synergies and trade-offs among sectors, reduce unintended negative consequences and turn the crises into opportunities for green, inclusive transitions for a sustainable future. Accelerating progress on the SDGs in a holistic and integrated way not only supports recovery from crises but also reduces future systemic risks.
In line with the theme selected for the general debate of the Second Committee, “Building a Sustainable Recovery for All”, the Dialogue with the Executive Secretaries will focus on the theme of “Catalyzing transformative actions and integrated approaches to sustainable development: regional experiences to accelerate progress on the SDGs” and will afford space to exchange and debate on regional perspectives and solution pathways.
Key objectives of the Dialogue will be to:
- share latest trends and regional perspectives on key levers to advance the transformational change required to achieve the 2030 Agenda
- demonstrate how Regional Commissions’ nexus approaches are contributing to advancing progress on the six transitions identified by the Secretary-General in a just and equitable manner
- share best practices and lessons learned from experiences in the regions in respect of advancing integrated and innovative policy responses and operational interventions
