Compendium of Climate Related Initiatives

Catalyzing climate finance and investment flows to ramp up climate action and advance the SDGs

Overview

The Regional Commissions New York Office released ahead of COP27 on behalf of the five Regional Commissions the Compendium of Climate-Related Initiatives: Opportunities for climate finance and investments on the SDGs. The Compendium presents a pipeline of high-impact and “investment-ready”, Paris-aligned climate-related initiatives from across the five regions to catalyze the flow of finance from private investors to Member States prior to, at and after COP27.

The Compendium is a product of a successful tripartite partnership between the five UN Regional Commissions, the Egyptian Presidency, and the High-Level Champions for COP26 and COP27. The three partners jointly organized across the five regions during the second and third quarter of 2022 on “Towards COP27: Regional Forums on Climate Initiatives to Finance Climate Action and the SDGs” (see below links to respective event webpages).

The regional roundtables brought together key stakeholders from public and private sectors, facilitated discussion around geographically diverse and impactful climate initiatives, and helped narrow the information gap on initiatives for potential investors.

The Compendium presents an overview of the climate finance landscape for each region as well as a selection of initiatives responding to country-driven priorities emanating from the regional roundtables. It is expected that the Compendium would help accelerate action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement by making available this critical data to potential financiers in a readily accessible and user-friendly format.

An extended Compendium containing additional initiatives that were discussed during the regional roundtables is also available on the respective websites of the Regional Commissions (see links above) and the High-Level Champions.

Going forward

The Regional Commissions continue to work with UN High Level Champions and the COP27 Presidency to facilitate the flow of climate finance to support country-driven climate priorities and advance just and inclusive transition pathways across energy, food, digital, and financial systems. In 2023, the partners will work with project owners to refine the pipelines and engage them in project matchmaking with financiers to catalyse finance flows to ramp up climate action and advance the SDGs.
