Seoul to Host Eighteenth Republic of Korea-United Nations Joint Conference on Disarmament, Non-Proliferation Issues, 13-14 November

NEW YORK, 11 November (Office for Disarmament Affairs) — The eighteenth Republic of Korea‑United Nations Joint Conference on Disarmament and Non‑proliferation Issues will take place in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on 13 and 14 November.

The annual event is organized by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Korea.  Around 30 representatives from Governments and intergovernmental organizations, as well as research institutes, academia and non‑governmental organizations will participate in the Conference.  Kang Jeong‑sik, Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and Thomas Markram, Director and Deputy to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, will open the Conference.

This annual Conference provides an important forum for a candid and constructive exchange of views among participants from around the world on current challenges to security, disarmament, non‑proliferation and arms control issues, at both the global and regional levels.

The 2019 Conference entitled, “2020 Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference”, will discuss prospects and building blocks for the 2020 NPT Review Conference, and ways to reinvigorate the review process.  Participants will also discuss regional non‑proliferation issues related to the Korean Peninsula.

The Conference is financed by the Government of the Republic of Korea, including through its voluntary contributions to the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs.
