Adopting Resolution 2055 (2012), Security Council Expands

1540 Committee’s Group of Experts

The Security Council today decided to increase the size of the group of experts attached to its committee monitoring the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004), which aims to keep weapons of mass destruction and their components out of the hands of terrorists and other non-State actors.

Through resolution 2055 (2012), adopted unanimously by the 15‑member body, the Council cited the increased workload of the subordinate body, known as the 1540 Committee, as the reason for its action.

Speaking before the adoption, the representative of Guatemala expressed appreciation for the Committee’s work, but stressed the need to respect the criteria for selecting experts.  In addition to being the most qualified, they must also reflect balanced representation, he said, adding that he would have preferred those criteria to have been respected in expanding the group of experts.  However, Guatemala had joined the consensus in adopting the resolution so as not to impede the Committee’s work.

The meeting began at 9:45 a.m. and ended at 9:48 a.m.
