SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH PRESIDENT OF COLOMBIA

19970925 The following statement was issued this evening by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan on his meeting with the President of Colombia, Ernesto Samper Pizano:

President Semper Pizano explained to the Secretary-General his efforts to achieve peace in Colombia. The Secretary-General welcomes all efforts to end the bloodshed. The President also informed the Secretary-General about the elections that are to be held at the end of October. The Secretary- General expressed the hope that it will be possible for these to take place in an atmosphere of peace so that citizens can express their wishes freely.
