SECRETARY-GENERAL DISTURBED BY REPORTS OF COUP D'ETAT IN SIERRA LEONE

19960116 The following is a statement attributable to the Spokesman for Secretary- General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General is disturbed by the reports of a coup d'etat in Sierra Leone today. He continues to believe that the political future of the country should be determined by free and fair elections. The United Nations remains committed to supporting the holding of such elections next months, as already agreed. The Secretary-General's good office also remain available, through his Special Envoy for Sierra Leone, to facilitate the establishment of a process of negotiation between the Government of Sierra Leone and the "Revolutionary United Front".
