Readout of the President of the General Assembly’s Meeting with H.E. Mr. Eloy Alfaro de Alba, Permanent Representative of Panama to the United Nation to the United Nations and President of the United Nations Security Council [August 2025]
The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Philemon Yang, met H.E. Ambassador Eloy Alfaro de Alba, Permanent Representative of Panama to the United Nation, on 28 July 2025.
The President of the General Assembly and the Ambassador discussed the programme of work for Panama’s upcoming Presidency of the United Nations Security Council, which begins on 1 August 2025. The Ambassador briefed the President of the General Assembly on Panama’s priorities for their term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and their Presidency, including a signature event on maritime security. They noted the importance of addressing conflict related sexual violence and ensuring gender equality remained a key part of the UN’s agenda.
The President and the Ambassador further discussed the importance of coordination and collaboration across UN organs, including in the context of the UN80 Initiative. They agreed on the importance of the meetings of the Presidents of the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council hat have taken place during the 79th session of the General Assembly, and which most recently had included the UN Secretary General.
