Before joining the Office of the President of the General Assembly, Yi worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China for 16 years, covering issues related to human rights, civil society, development, ASEM and Middle East. He also served for four years in the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland, majorly dealing with Human Rights Council. In his diplomatic career, Yi has participated in many important multilateral conferences and negotiations, particularly those of Second and Third Committee of General Assembly.
Yi speaks fluent Chinese and English, and has a Master Diploma of Public and International Law of Melbourne University.
