Peacebuilding Partners - Switzerland
Switzerland
Switzerland is committed to strengthening the UN peacebuilding architecture. DPPA’s Peacebuilding Support Office is grateful to Switzerland for being a multi-year donor and for responding to the Secretary-General’s call for a “quantum leap” in support to increase contributions to the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) and reinforce conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts worldwide. Switzerland advocated strongly for sustainable peace during its term on the Security Council 2023-24, has served as a member of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC).
Switzerland is among the top donors to the PBF and a lead supporter of the UN-IFI Partnership Facility, having contributed more than $38 million during the PBF Strategy 2020–2026. At the UN General Assembly debate on the reports of the PBC and the PBF, Switzerland announced a new voluntary contribution of nearly $10 million for 2025–2026. This support reflects one of the priorities of Switzerland’s Foreign Policy Strategy 2024–2027: peace and security.
Switzerland firmly believes that human rights are a cornerstone of sustaining peace. Its contribution to the PBF enabled the Fund to establish an early-warning system in the Central African Republic. The Swiss support has also expanded the participation of local women and youth in civic and leadership roles, for instance through capacities building of 56 women-led civil society organizations, working closely with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSCA).
The Swiss contribution to the Fund also serves to provide support to central and structural efforts to peace and security. In Chad for instance, the PBF was able to provide initial support to shape the forthcoming DDR process, a key measure foreseen in the 2022 Doha peace agreement: this should contribute to stability while institutional reforms will address underlying challenges to peace. This also echoes Switzerland’s peace engagement in this country, offering valuable synergies.
