About the 2020 Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture

The 2016 twin resolutions on the review of the peacebuilding architecture (A/RES/70/262 and S/RES/2282 (2016)) call for a “comprehensive review of United Nations peacebuilding” to be conducted during the 74th session of the General Assembly. Resolutions A/RES/72/276 and S/RES/2413 (2018) request the Secretary-General to submit to the GA, at its 74th session, “a detailed report in connection with the next comprehensive review of the peacebuilding architecture, focusing on continued implementation of resolution 70/262, and progress in the implementation of the recommendations and options contained in his report on peacebuilding and sustaining peace.

 

Agreed by the Terms of Reference endorsed on 31 October 2019, the 2020 Review of the United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture will take stock of progress and look forward, with the view of further improving the work of the UN on peacebuilding, with emphasis on implementation at the field level, taking into account the context of the ongoing reforms of the United Nations.

 

The President of the General Assembly and President of the Security Council informed Member States that they have decided to appoint H.E. Mr. Craig John Hawke, Permanent Representative of New Zealand, and H.E. Ms. Inga Rhonda King, Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, to cofacilitate the intergovernmental consultations during the formal phase of the review process.

 

On 21 December 2020, the General Assembly and the Security Council concluded the review process by adopting new twin resolutions A/RES/75/201 and S/RES/2558 (2020) on peacebuilding and sustaining peace.

About the 2020 Report of the Secretary-General on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace

The 2020 Report of the Secretary-General on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace (A/74/976-S/2020/773) is the principal input into the 2020 Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture. The entire UN system has been engaged for in preparation of the Report, led by a core group of UN entities (DPPA/PBSO, DPPA/PMD, DPO/DPET, DPO/OROLSI, DCO, OHCHR, UNDP, UN Women) and  it was consulted widely throughout the system (including through the Peacebuilding Contact Group and Peacebuilding Strategy Group). 

 

UN thematic papers on various aspects of peacebuilding and sustaining peace were received from across the UN system. Many entities also provided evaluation materials to ensure a focus on results and impact in the field. Extensive field inputs were also gathered.
