On 23 December 2024, the Secretary-General appointed Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld of Sweden Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel. The United Nations Secretariat and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden issued press releases on this occasion.
Ms. Hammarskjöld has more than 30 years of experience working in foreign and security policy, public international law and human rights. She is currently the Director-General for Legal Affairs and Head of the Directorate-General for Legal Affairs at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, and previously served as Director-General for Political Affairs.
Ms. Hammarskjöld is expected to assume her functions in early February. The staff of the Office of Legal Affairs looks forward to the arrival of its new Head.
