The Government of Argentina hosted a regional workshop with participants from 14 countries in Buenos Aires from 28 September 2022 - 30 September 2022 in support of the United Nations Regular Process for the scoping of the next World Ocean Assessment(s).
The Regular Process for Global Reporting and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment, including Socioeconomic Aspects (
Regular Process) is an intergovernmental process led by the UN General Assembly, and supported by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations as its Secretariat. The Regular Process aims to review the environmental, economic and social aspects of the state of the ocean, with the view to producing the World Ocean Assessment amongst other outputs.
These
World Ocean Assessments are undertaken by hundreds of experts across many disciplines from around the world to provide an ongoing evaluation of the state of the ocean, the services that it provides, and the human activities that influence its state. The work of the
Regular Process strengthens the regular scientific assessment of the marine environment and enhances the scientific basis for policy making.
Regional workshops serve to raise awareness on the Regular Process and to facilitate the scoping and preparation of the assessment(s), with a particular emphasis on drawing on the expertise in all regions of the world. The workshop held in Buenos Aires, Argentina covered the region of the South Atlantic (between the African and American coasts) and the Wider Caribbean area.
Held in the Palacio San Martín, Ambassador Pablo Tettamanti, Argentine Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship and Ambassador Holger Martinsen, Legal Adviser of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship joined the workshop for opening and closing remarks. Other participants included regional technical experts and members of the Regular Process Group of Experts.
