A characteristic feature of world expos is a day to honour the participation of countries and international organizations. The United Nations Special Day at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan was observed on 22 August in the presence of Secretary-General António Guterres.

“The moral of the United Nations story is simple: humanity is strongest when we stand as one. Expo 2025 is a celebration of that possibility. It is a reminder that designing the future is not the job of governments alone. It is a shared responsibility that belongs to us all,” the Secretary-General told representatives of the Japanese Government, UN officials and staff, dozens of Commissioners-General, pavilion directors and staff, media and the public.

Referencing the Expo’s official theme, "Designing Future Society for Our Lives", Mr. Guterres also underlined the need to reform and revitalize the United Nations system, particularly the Security Council, so that it reflects the world of 2025, not that of 1945 when it was established.

“United for a Better Future”

Takuma Miyaji, Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, also addressed the packed National Day Hall before virtual performances from two UN Messengers of Peace: cellist Yo-Yo Ma and conductor of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra Daniel Barenboim. Egolado from Kwansei Gakuin University gave an a cappella performance, as well.

The song lyrics and messages of the musicians exemplified the ideal of “United for a Better Future” that the UN Pavilion represents.

Guterres’s visit was also an opportunity to affirm the strong ties between the UN and Japan. The Japanese delegation, including Her Imperial Highness Princess Tsuguko of Takamado, joined in visiting the Japan Pavilion and the UN Pavilion. The UN Pavilion team welcomed senior and working-level UN representatives based in Japan and abroad.

The UN at Expo 2025

Out of 274,000 visitors to the UN Pavilion from 13 April to 19 August, 106,053 participated in the online survey (39 per cent) with 94 per cent positive feedback. Most importantly, 96 per cent said that their perception of the United Nations has improved after visiting the UN Pavillion.

Thanks to our UN system colleagues from across the globe, who have organized temporary exhibits (17 so far!) and events.

With fewer than 50 days before the Expo closes on 13 October, the UN Pavilion team will continue to share key messages with visitors. We hope to see you there!
