Today, the UN Pavilion hosted a talk event organized by RCC, a broadcasting company based in Hiroshima, with support from the UN Information Centre Tokyo. The event welcomed Ms. Toshiko Tanaka, a Hiroshima atomic bomb survivor (Hibakusha) who has traveled to more than 80 countries to share her experience. With the support of Prof. Hidenori Watanabe from the University of Tokyo, the event also showcased videos taken immediately after the bombing, which had been colorized using artificial intelligence. UNIC Director Ms. Kaoru Nemoto highlighted how the UN system has been striving for decades to achieve non-proliferation and disarmament. Opening the event, the Commissioner-General of the UN Pavilion recalled the Secretary-General’s speech delivered on the UN Special Day, which emphasized the need to reform the Organization to reflect today’s world, not that of 1945, in order for it to contribute to peace in the way it was established to do in that same year.
