Disabled Persons  Bulletin No. 2 of 1999

This issue explores the basis for disability statistics and indicators, and what the United Nations has done in this area. Some thoughts about the development of global disability indicators are included.

Bulletin des personnes handicapées, No 2, 1999

1999 Bulletin No. 1

This issue contains the report of the United Nations Consultative Expert Group Meeting on International Norms and Standards Relating to Disability, convened by the United Nations in cooperation with Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley, and the World Institute on Disability (Oakland, California) at Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California at Berkeley, from 8 to12 December 1998.

1998 Bulletin No. 2

This issue of the Bulletin presents an overview of the international normative frameworks relating to disability and discusses their application in the regional and national contexts. A draft compilation of international legal norms and standards on disabilities has been prepared by the Programme on Disability of the United Nations Secretariat to promote wider application of the international norms and standards to promote the rights of persons with disabilities in the broader human rights framework.

1997 Bulletin No. 3

This issue focuses on the third review and appraisal of the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons and the 1997 International Day of Disabled Persons. At its fifty-second session, in 1997, the General Assembly considered the report of the Secretary-General on the third review and appraisal. There was a lively and productive debate on the topic; 44 Governments sponsored a draft resolution on further action and suggested privatization in the disability field. The draft was adopted by the Assembly on 12 December 1997, as resolution 52/82.

This special issue of the Bulletin is devoted to reporting on the Global Workshop on Children with Disabilities, which was held at Washington, D.C. from 5 to 7 February 1997. The Bulletin also reviews a number of other activities in the
field, including the discussion of the report of the Special Rapporteur on Disability by the Commission for Social Development at its thirty-fifth session.

1996 Bulletin Nos. 2 and 3 (76KB)

This double issue of the Bulletin focuses on two major events in which the Division for Social Policy and Development of the United Nations Secretariat participated: the Third Paralympic Congress and the 1996 observation of the International Day of Disabled Persons.

This issue of the Bulletin focuses on the work of the Special Rapporteur on Disability of the Commission for Social Development. Mr. Bengt Lindqvist, related to the circulation of his second questionnaire to Governments on monitoring the implementation of the Standard Rules on Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities.
