United Nations International Day of Youth, 12 August 2010. In line with the theme for the International Year, the theme for this year’s International Youth Day is “Dialogue and Mutual Understanding”. The choice of theme reflects the General Assembly’s appreciation of the value of dialogue among youth from different cultures as well as among different generations.
The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC), highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development, in particular recognizing their impact on poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration.
The Civil Society and Outreach Unit of DSPD Launched a New Online Directory of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) having established steady working relationships with DSPD-UNDESA. These CSOs, referred to as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), work in various fields of social development: poverty eradication, social integration, employment, youth, aging, family, disability, indigenous peoples and cooperatives.
The UN Programme on Youth is pleased to launch the new logo for the International Year of Youth. The official slogan for the International Year of Youth (IYY) is: Our Year. Our Voice. The official logo for IYY is available to download and attach onto promotional materials for events organized in celebration of the Year. The United Nations Secretary-General's latest report on progress made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals has been released.
DSPD has launched on 28 January 2010 its new publication Rethinking Poverty: Report on the World Social Situation 2010. The report makes a compelling case for rethinking poverty and poverty-reduction efforts, saying that over-reliance on market forces and economic liberalization have led to neglect of nationally designed and developmentally-oriented strategies, to the detriment of the world’s poor.
New Publication: Analysing and Measuring Social Inclusion in a Global Context. The objective of the study is to serve as a guiding framework for policymakers, researchers and practitioners interested in developing practical tools for evidence-based policymaking, impact assessment, monitoring and evaluation in the area of social inclusion.
DSPD has launched its new publication State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. The report notes that the world’s 370 million indigenous peoples suffer from disproportionately, often exponentially, higher rates of poverty, health problems, crime and human rights abuses; stressing that self-determination and land rights are vital for their survival.

The world continues to make advances towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), despite the global economic downturn, but the rate of improvement remains too slow and countries must step up their efforts if the MDGs are to be achieved by their target date of 2015, a new United Nations report says.
