19th Meeting of Senior Fellowship Officers of the United Nations System, National Placement and Supervising Agencies, 25-27 September 2012, Trieste, Italy

As focal point for inter-agency fellowship coordination the Capacity Development Office of DESA has organized the 19th Meeting of Senior Fellowships Officers of the United Nations System, National Placement and Supervising Agencies which was held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy from 25 to 27 September 2012.

The Meeting reinforced inter-agency harmonization of policies, procedures and entitlements in the framework of the second generation of “Delivering as one”. The Meeting also facilitated an in-depth exchange of views on substantive and administrative aspects of fellowships programmes and other training activities with particular emphasis on the UN Academic Impact initiative and on the possibilities of UN agencies to facilitate common services in the field of training and fellowships. As one of the main topics of the Meeting was Fellowships and Capacity Development, for the first time selected former fellows were invited to share their experiences on fellowships, the relevance of the training programmes to the needs of the beneficiary countries and the importance of alumni networking. Among the invited alumni was a sitting cabinet Minister, whose exceptional journey is a great example of the impact of UN fellowships on capacity development.

During the conference the recommendations of the 18th Senior Fellowship Officers Meeting have been evaluated. The Meeting fostered a common approach and aimed to improve the overall effectiveness of the Fellowship Programmes of the United Nations System. It also facilitated an exchange of ideas and analysis of some of the administrative aspects of the Fellowships Programmes.
