Tackling Abuse of Older People: 5 priorities for the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing
WHO, in collaboration with members of the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Ageing (IAGA), experts in the field and representatives from civil society launched an advocacy brief “Tackling Abuse of Older People: Five Priorities for the Decade of Healthy Ageing” at an event organized by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in collaboration with WHO, DESA and the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by older persons. UNGA77 efforts to be guided by “Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science”
The General Assembly elected Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi, Director of Environmental Sustainability at the Office of the President of Hungary, to serve as President of its 77th session. In his acceptance speech, the Ambassador vowed to make ‘Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science’ the motto for his presidency’s efforts.’ Click here for more information. 5 reasons not to miss the World Population Prospects 2022
DESA recently released the World Population Prospects 2022. This is the 27th edition of the official estimates and projections of the global population, published by the United Nations since 1951. The summary of results shows that the share of the global population at ages 65 and above is projected to rise from 10 per cent in 2022 to 16 per cent in 2050. At that point, it is expected that the number of persons aged 65 years or over worldwide will be more than twice the number of children under age 5 and about the same as the number under age 12. It’s now or never: achieving the SDGs hinges on effective crises response
World leaders, entrepreneurs, researchers, advocates, practitioners and activists came together in the UNHQ building in New York for the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development and ECOSOC High-level Segment (5-15 July) to share successes and setbacks in achieving the Global Goals. The 2022 theme was “Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” Click here for more information.
The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022 was launched. It provides a global overview of progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, using the latest available data and estimates. It tracks the global and regional progress towards the 17 Goals with in-depth analyses of selected indicators for each Goal.
The Stakeholder Group on Ageing, in collaboration with members of the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Ageing (IAGA) and the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by older persons, organized a side event on “Older Women in Crises: Invisible among the most vulnerable” (14 July). Geneva hosts a Multistakeholder Meeting on the Human Rights of Older Persons
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva is organizing a Multi-stakeholder Meeting on the Human Rights of Older Persons to be held on 29-30 August 2022 in a hybrid format at the Palais des Nations (Room XVII). This meeting is held pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 48/3. Click here for more information.

Report of the Secretary-General on ageing to UNGA77
The report (A/77/134) provides an analysis of the impact of digital technologies on older persons and identifies policy implications of the Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation for older persons. GCoA High-level Forum on the Silver Economy
The Global Coalition on Aging, is collaborating with members of the United Nations Inter-Agency Group on Ageing to convene its second Silver Economy Forum on November 8-9 in New York, Boston, Geneva and virtually. The Forum will focus on the policies and practices required to leverage the potential of the $17 trillion Silver Economy. It will build upon the work of 2019’s Forum in Helsinki, Finland, which featured more than 600 global leaders at the forefront of the ageing megatrend, including Government officials and Fortune Global 500 company executives.
