The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), more commonly known as COP29, will be the 29th United Nations Climate Change conference. COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11 - 22 November 2024.

The “COP29-Climate and Peace” Co-lead Initiative endorsed by Egypt, Germany, Italy, Uganda, the United Kingdom and Azerbaijan is an outcome of the first meeting of the Leads Group of the Initiative held on 26-27 July 2024. The Co-lead Initiative expressed its commitment to facilitate at the COP29 Peace, Relief, and Recovery Day “solutions-oriented discussions on the key issues of water scarcity, food insecurity, land degradation and restoration, as well as climate-related migration as a cross-cutting issue”. Building on the highlights put on the topic of “climate and peace nexus” at previous COPs, in particular the COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace, the Initiative co-led by the Group together with the COP29 Presidency envisages to deliver concrete outcomes to open up “avenues for scaling up support and finance for the most affected countries facing multiple challenges due to climate change, conflict and fragility” such as joint call on the urgency of climate action for peace and a center of excellence type of platform to deepen dialogue and understanding, and foster further action on the peace and climate nexus.

On COP29 Peace, Relief, and Recovery Day on 15 November 2024, the Climate Security Mechanism together with the Group of Friends on Climate and Security convened an official COP29 high-level side-event entitled “Peace and Security in a Changing Climate: From Analysis to Action”.

As in previous years, the CSM maintained a calendar of climate, peace and security-related side events at/during COP29 on the Climate, Peace and Security Trello board.
