Cesar Maia has been the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro since 1992. He has developed major social programmes for the city, including the Rio Cidade and Favela-Bairro projects, consisting of the renovation of urban landscape and other major structural improvements, especially in the poorest neighbourhoods.
