The United Nations Postal Administration issued six postage stamps featuring World Heritage sites in Türkiyeon on 8 September.
After a devastating earthquake struck Syria and Türkiye earlier in the year, the UN pledged its support and assistance to these countries. The United Nations Postal Administration hopes that by issuing these stamps they bring awareness to the importance of the protection and preservation of these beautiful sites and show solidarity with the country and people of Türkiye.
The stamps feature:
-
Nemrut Dağ (66¢)
-
Selimiye Mosque ($1.50)
-
Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia (CHF 1,10)
-
Great Mosque and Hospital of Divriği (CHF 1,80)
-
Ephesus (€1,20)
-
Historic Areas of Istanbul (€ 2,10)
Three beautifully designed English, French, and German prestige booklets accompany the stamp series. The booklets feature colourful photographs and detailed information about these World Heritage sites.
The stamps and prestige booklets were designed by Rorie Katz of the UNPA.
For many years, UNPA has highlighted World Heritage sites recognized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which seeks to encourage the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world in recognition of their outstanding value to humanity.
This is embodied in the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, which was adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
The stamps are available online at www.unstamps.org and in-person from shops at the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva, and Vienna where the stamps can be used for mailing.
