Mr. Dankert Vedeler, Assistant Director-General, Ministry of Education, Norway, Co-Chair of the Steering CommitteeMr. Tang Qian, Assistant Director-General for Education, UNESCO, Co-chair of the Steering CommitteeExcellencies,Ladies and gentlemen,
It is a great honour to be here today at the third meeting of the SDG – Education Steering Committee.
Education is an integral part of the 2030 Agenda and a key enabler for it. It is encouraging to see that, since its establishment in 2016, the SDG – Education Steering Committee has taken a lead role in global coordination for the education goal.
Excellencies,Ladies and gentlemen,
Two years have passed since the adoption of the transformative 2030 Agenda. We can now begin to take stock of how much we have achieved in early implementation. Countries are progressing well in incorporating SDGs into national plans, undertaking gap analysis and promoting policy coherence.
It is evident that understanding how the SDGs interact with each other is key to their success. Only when taken as a cohesive whole by countries will the SDGs have a chance of being met.
Education is both a goal in itself and a means for attaining all the other SDGs. The integrated, indivisible nature of the Sustainable Development Goals is clearer than ever. Education promotes empowerment and yields important development benefits. As such the right to education is essential for the exercise of all other human rights.
For example, quality inclusive education helps break the vicious cycle of poverty, working towards goal 1. Another example is Goal 5 on gender equality, since quality inclusive education helps to achieve gender equality and empower girls. Investing in girls’ education will not only transform their lives, it will help us build the resilient societies and sustainable economies we wish to achieve.
Quality inclusive education also fosters self-esteem, skills in entrepreneurship and innovation while promoting full and productive employment opportunities for all. This specifically targets Goal 8, on decent work and economic growth.
The interlinkages with other goals are vast.
Excellencies,Ladies and gentlemen,
Access to education is an important tool to achieve other SDGs and empower those who are furthest behind. It is also a powerful tool to foster awareness of sustainable development in order to promote sustainable lifestyles by each and every individual.
I am delighted to see the growing international recognition of Education for Sustainable Development as an integral element of quality education and a key enabler for sustainable development.
The three global development summits, 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, 2002 in Johannesburg and 2012 in Rio de Janeiro again, the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, the Millennium Development Goals and the SDGs have all contributed to this trend.
However, we need to step up our effort to raise awareness about the 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals. People require the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that empower them to contribute to sustainable development.
Excellencies,Ladies and gentlemen,
The Sustainable Development Goals cannot be achieved without working together. The success of the 2030 Agenda will be determined by the level of commitment to its implementation by all partners; governments, international organization, civil society, and business.
As an inclusive high-level stakeholder partnership, the SDG – Education Steering Committee leads by example. Partnerships are needed to translate the SDG framework into meaningful and efficient action at the national level. It is equally important to bring lessons learned from the national and regional level to global level review and follow up.
I welcome you to engage with the High Level Political Forum, the UN’s central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda. This year the goals under review – 1, 2, 3, 5, 9, and 14, are closely linked to goal 4. Moreover, 44 countries have volunteered to take part in the Voluntary National Reviews. In 2019 the HLPF will review progress on goal 4.
Achieving inclusive and equitable quality education for all requires increasing efforts by the whole of society. Let’s work together to make this happen.
I thank you.
